Quality Writing

Course Overview

Quality Writing is an innovative program designed to empower high school students with the skills, confidence, and discipline needed to become effective and authentic writers. This course goes beyond basic composition, focusing on nurturing each student's unique voice and developing their ability to articulate ideas clearly and persuasively.

Why Quality Writing Matters

In a world where communication is key, the ability to write well is more than just an academic skill—it's a life skill. Whether you're crafting an essay, composing a college application, or expressing your thoughts in a journal, quality writing opens doors and clarifies thinking.

Writing as a Muscle, Not a Talent

At the heart of our philosophy is the belief that writing is a skill that can be developed, not an innate talent. Like any professional athlete, strategically organized, thoughtfully executed practice is key. The course is all about developing a consistent writing practice by making writing meaningful. Why does it matter and how does it relate to you? In harnessing the power of reflection and revision, our recursive process of writing, feedback, reflection, and revision helps students:

  • Gain valuable insights into their writing — and therefore thinking — process

  • Learn to critically evaluate their own and other’s work

  • Understand the importance of multiple drafts in achieving quality

  • Develop greater self-expression and self-awareness through writing

A little bit about myself: I was born and raised in Taiwan (Tianmu, to be exact!) and attended Taipei American School from K-12, graduating with the IB Bilingual Diploma. I originally thought I would become a biomedical engineer, having done independent research in robotics and synthetic biology. But the Universe – and university admissions officers – had other plans: I ultimately graduated from UC Berkeley, triple majoring in Cognitive Science, Sociology, and Political Economy, with a minor in Education.

If I had to summarize, Cognitive Science taught me how individuals work, Sociology how groups work, and Political Economy how systems work. Yet, while my majors taught me facts that can change people, Education taught me how to inspire that change.

During my undergrad years, I also found my way into yet another discipline: becoming a self-taught filmmaker. Outside of shooting commercials, documentaries, and narrative films, I served as the business chair at Delta Kappa Alpha, Berkeley’s Professional Cinematic Society. Over the two years which I presided, I built both the in-house production team and the A-Z onboarding curriculum, teaching over 100+ students all things filmmaking. These changes propelled DKA to become the only organization on campus that made significant revenue, paying students over USD $20,000 across each of the four semesters! What I love about filmmaking is that it teaches not just the art of storytelling (through screenwriting and editing), but business and crisis management (through producing), leadership and empathy (through directing), and teamwork and charisma (through acting). Even in the arts, I found ways to lead with education.

Upon returning to Taiwan, I developed Critical Reading and College Essay Writing curriculums and taught both independently and at notable local prep schools. Since then, I’ve worked with hundreds of high school students helping them gain admissions into universities like Columbia, UChicago, Cornell, Brown, NYU, USC, University of Washington, USC, UCLA, and more.

Whether it is reading philosophy, college essay writing, filmmaking, or college admissions, at the core of my teaching philosophy is self-orientation. You must know where you are before you can go where you want. “Who am I? What’s my goal? Why do I do what I do?”  It is through these introspections we begin to identify paths toward achievements in areas that matter to you in real, world-changing ways. My mission is to help students do just that. No matter what a student is interested in (and trust me, it is OK to have many!) what matters is identifying the space at which they all intersect and making it your own.

Acta Academy is founded to help me help students fulfill that vision.
